5.7  Section Review: Style & Language Use

  1. Style & Language Use refers to word choice, correctness and variety of sentences, and the appropriateness of both to your audience.

  2. Style is determined by the decisions you make as a writer, including word choice and sentence structure. Style = Tone + Voice.

  3. Audience is the reader(s) of your essay.

  4. Tone is the manner of expression that comes through from your writing.

  5. Voice is the personality that comes through from your writing.

  6. Word Choice affects tone, attitude, and imagery (what the reader pictures).

  7. Denotation is a word's dictionary definition. Connotation, the associations and reactions people have toward a word, is often more powerful. Connotations can create positive (slender), neutral (slim), or negative (skinny) reactions.

  8. Run-on sentences (too much) and sentence fragments (too little) are two common errors in sentence structure.

  9. There are four main sentence structures:

    • Simple
    • Compound
    • Complex
    • Compound-Complex
